BULVAR SAMSUN SHOPPING AND LIVING CENTER: A Historic Renovation Project

Bulvar Samsun Shopping and Living Center was reintegrated into the economy through the restoration of the historic Samsun Tobacco Factory, which had been unused for 18 years, as part of an urban renewal project.

This historic building, established in 1887 and serving the country’s economy as a factory for many years, is located right in the middle of the important shopping areas of Mecidiye and Gazi Streets. The building had been inactive since 1994 but was restored as part of an exemplary urban renewal project. The restoration work, which began in the third quarter of 2010, was completed in just 25 months.

Opened to the public in July 2012, Bulvar Samsun has become a major attraction not only for the local population but also for foreign tourists visiting the Black Sea region. Visitors have the opportunity to shop in Samsun’s unique historic locations and participate in cultural events.

The Bulvar Samsun Shopping and Living Center, realized with an investment of 50 million Euros, hosts 45 local and international brands and has created approximately 1000 jobs. Covering an area of 17,400 square meters, the center has a leasable area of 16,000 square meters. Of this area, 11,600 square meters are allocated for shops, 2,400 square meters for restaurants and cafés, and 2,000 square meters for office spaces. Additionally, there is a 20,000-square-meter indoor parking area.

Bulvar Samsun features a large courtyard and square reflecting typical Anatolian architecture. In the center of the square, which hosts cultural and artistic events, there is a monument dedicated to the workers who contributed significantly to the national economy by working in this factory for many years. The statue, symbolizing a tobacco leaf and depicting a working pair, was created by sculptor Hakan Karakaya.

Bulvar Samsun won the "Special Jury Award for Best European Renovation Project" and the "Honour Award for Best Shopping Centre in Europe" at the 2013 ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards. It was also honored with the "Best Shopping Centre" award at the annual ArkiPARC Real Estate Awards organized by Arkitera Architecture Center.

History

The factory located in the city center, known as Cumhuriyet Square, was built on an area of approximately 37,000 square meters and served Samsun for 110 years. Additionally, storage and maintenance facilities were built for the main raw material of the factory, tobacco leaves.

In the early years of the factory, approximately 800 people were employed. After it was closed in 1997, the historical Samsun Tobacco Factory remained unused for many years and was declared a Renewal Area by a Cabinet Decision in 2006.
