What is VB-MAPP?
VB-MAPP (Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program) is a comprehensive program developed by Dr. Mark Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA, designed to assess the learning, language, and social skills of children with autism and other developmental delays. This program provides educators and families with the tools to objectively evaluate and monitor the development of children.
Based on Skinner's Verbal Behavior analysis, VB-MAPP helps identify barriers that may impact learning and language development. Unlike ABBLS, VB-MAPP is structured according to the stages observed in normal language development. The program has been field-tested on 75 typically developing children and over 200 children with autism and is widely used by ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) practitioners and BCBAs (Board Certified Behavior Analysts) in the United States.
VB-MAPP consists of five main components:

Milestones Assessment: Focuses on 170 different milestones that form the foundation for language learning and social development. These milestones are divided into three developmental levels (0-18 months, 18-30 months, and 30-48 months), with objective measurement criteria for each milestone.

Barriers Assessment: Evaluates 24 different barriers that may hinder the child’s ability to learn new skills.

Transition Assessment: A guide for planning the child’s educational needs in school, covering 18 different areas.

Task Analysis and Skill Tracking: Includes approximately 900 different skills that support the milestones assessment. This component can be used for daily curriculum and skill tracking.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Goals: Establishes customized educational goals based on the child’s specific needs.
